Karen lights candle of thanks for her baby: Some time today in a quiet moment Karen Wilson will sit down with her 21-month-old daughter Ella at their Buddina home and light a red candle. A reflective Karen will think of the birth mother of her Chinese godsend and offer her heartfelt thanks. There will also be enormous empathy as well for a mother's loss on this, Karen's first Mother's Day.

Hollis Meyer: Hollis Meyer, a police officer since she was 20, was married, wanted children but couldn't conceive. Her husband wanted to retire and move to Colorado. She wanted to adopt; he didn't. They divorced -- and Meyer proceeded to adopt from China. "It was a hard decision, but I wanted a family," she says. Her mother moved in to help.

Local Story

Carmians welcome child from China: Emma, born about 15 1/2 months ago in China and abandoned by her birth parents, is now a member of the Roedder family, joining older sisters Haley, 7, and Peyton, 6. A resident of a threadbare Chinese orphanage for the first nine months of her life, the little girl is now walking (if not talking much), playing and getting to know her adoptive family and adoptive country.
